  • 1 can Spam The star of the show; classic or lower sodium can be used.
  • 2 cups Sushi Rice Sticky rice is ideal; quinoa can be used for a lighter option.
  • 5 sheets Nori Sheets Cut in half for easier handling.

Sauces and Seasonings

  • 1/4 cup Soy Sauce Tamari works for a gluten-free option.
  • 2 tablespoons Teriyaki Sauce Adds depth of flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Mirin Optional; enhances flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Rinse the sushi rice in cold water until the water runs clear, then drain.
  • Cook the rice according to package instructions, typically using 2 cups of water for every cup of rice.
  • While the rice cooks, slice the Spam into 1/4-inch thick rectangles.

Cooking

  • In a skillet over medium heat, add the Spam slices and sauté until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  • Drizzle soy sauce and teriyaki sauce over the Spam in the last minute of cooking and allow it to caramelize.

Assembly

  • Once the rice is cooked, fluff it and mix in mirin (if using) and a sprinkle of salt.
  • Lay a sheet of plastic wrap on a clean surface or bamboo mat, place a nori strip on top, shiny side down.
  • Wet your hands to prevent sticking and grab a handful of rice, pressing it onto the nori to create a square shape.
  • Place a piece of Spam in the center and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
  • Fold the nori over the Spam, using the plastic wrap to help shape it tightly. Wrap the bottom with plastic wrap to secure.
  • Repeat with remaining ingredients until all musubi are made.

Notes

Tips for success include cooking the rice properly, using a sharp knife for clean cuts, and letting kids assist in wrapping the nori.
