Preparation

  • In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil.
  • Add the penne and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve ½ cup pasta water and drain the rest.
  • In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic, cooking until fragrant—about 1 minute.
  • Sprinkle in the red pepper flakes and Italian seasoning, stirring to combine.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
  • Stir in the cooked penne, adding reserved pasta water as needed to reach desired sauce consistency.
  • Toss in the fresh basil just before serving.
  • Plate with a sprinkle of Parmesan on top.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days or freeze for up to three months. Reheat gently, adding a splash of water if needed.
