Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4 medium medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended) For a balance of sweetness and tartness.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter Helps to create a rich, creamy texture.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar For deep caramel flavor; coconut sugar can be used for a healthier option.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adds warmth; nutmeg or allspice can be delightful alternatives.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Keeps the apples from browning and adds tanginess.
  • a pinch salt Enhances the sweetness of caramel.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by washing and peeling the apples. Core them and slice into thin wedges – about 1/4 inch thick.

Cooking

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter until it starts to foam slightly.
  • Stir in the brown sugar and a pinch of salt until the mixture is smooth and begins to bubble and thicken.
  • Toss in the sliced apples, ensuring they are coated in the caramel sauce. Stir gently as they soften, about 10 minutes.
  • After the apples have softened, sprinkle in the cinnamon and drizzle with lemon juice.
  • Allow the apples to cook for another 5 minutes until soft and glistening with caramel.
  • Remove from heat and prepare to serve.

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a saucepan with a splash of water or lemon juice to loosen the caramel if thickened.
