Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 4-5 medium russet or Yukon Gold potatoes Thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Feel free to mix with Gruyère or Monterey Jack
  • 2 cups heavy cream Can substitute with half-and-half or Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup milk Whole milk works best
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted Can substitute with olive oil for a dairy-free version
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Garlic powder can be used if in a hurry
  • Salt and black pepper To taste
  • Chives or green onions For garnish, optional

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with melted butter.
  • Layer sliced potatoes at the bottom of the dish, overlapping them slightly.
  • Season each layer with salt, pepper, and minced garlic, then add a layer of shredded cheese.
  • Continue layering potatoes, seasonings, and cheese until the top is reached.
  • In a bowl, mix heavy cream and milk, then pour it evenly over the layers. The liquid should barely cover the potatoes.
  • Top with an extra handful of cheese.

Cooking

  • Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and bubbly.
  • Let it cool slightly, sprinkle with chives or green onions, and enjoy.

Notes

For added flavor, consider layering cooked bacon, stirring in sautéed vegetables or adding fresh herbs like thyme or rosemary.
