  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Adds richness and helps the tops brown.
  • 2 tablespoons 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard Tangy balance for the sweetness.
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon poppy seeds Optional but iconic; sesame seeds can substitute.
  • 1 tablespoon 1 tablespoon minced onion or 1 teaspoon onion powder Brightens the butter topping.
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce Deepens savory notes; use soy sauce for a gluten-free alternative.
  • Salt and pepper to taste To enhance flavor.

Substitutions

  • For a dairy-free option use dairy-free butter and vegan cheese; use gluten-free rolls for gluten sensitivity.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking dish with parchment for easy cleanup.
  • Slice the Hawaiian rolls horizontally, keeping the top and bottom connected so you can fill all at once.
  • Layer half the rolls with ham slices, folding as needed to fit snugly.
  • Top the ham with Swiss cheese, covering evenly. Place the top half of the rolls back in place.

Topping

  • In a small bowl, whisk melted butter, Dijon mustard, minced onion, poppy seeds, and Worcestershire sauce. Add a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Brush the butter mixture generously over the tops of the rolls, letting some drip into the seams for extra flavor between layers.

Baking

  • Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 10 minutes, then remove foil and bake for another 2–5 minutes until the tops are golden and the cheese is melty.
  • Let rest for 2 minutes, then slice between the rolls and serve warm.

Notes

Serve with crunchy pickles, a crisp green salad, or a bowl of tomato soup for dipping.
