Ingredients

For the meatballs

  • 1 lb Ground Beef For a classic flavor; lean options work well for a healthier choice.
  • 1/2 lb Ground Pork Adds richness, but you can substitute turkey for a lighter option.
  • 3/4 cup Breadcrumbs Use Italian breadcrumbs for extra flavor, or opt for whole wheat for a healthy swap.
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan Cheese Freshly grated offers the best taste; vegan parmesan is a great alternative.
  • 1 large Egg Acts as a binder; use flaxseed meal mixed with water for a vegan substitute.
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced Fresh garlic enhances depth of flavor, while jarred garlic can work in a pinch.
  • 1 small Onion, finely chopped Sweetness and moisture; shallots can be used for a milder taste.
  • 1/4 cup Fresh Parsley, chopped Gives freshness; feel free to substitute with basil or oregano.
  • to taste Salt and Pepper Fresh cracked pepper can elevate the flavors.

For the marinara sauce

  • 28 oz Crushed Tomatoes Use San Marzano for authentic flavor, or any quality canned tomatoes will suffice.
  • 2 tbsp Olive Oil Extra virgin for richness; canola or avocado oil is a lighter alternative.
  • 1 tsp Dried Oregano A must for authenticity; Italian seasoning can be a great shortcut.
  • 1 tsp Basil (fresh or dried) Fresh basil adds a burst of flavor at the end; dried works well throughout the cooking process.
  • 1 tbsp Sugar Optional, helps to balance acidity; try honey or agave for a healthier option.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped onion, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  • Shape the mixture into meatballs, about 1.5 inches in diameter.
  • Place the meatballs on a lined baking sheet and bake for about 15 minutes, until they’re browned on the outside.

Sauce Preparation

  • While the meatballs bake, heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes, dried oregano, salt, and sugar. Let it simmer.

Final Cooking

  • Once the meatballs are done, transfer them to the simmering sauce. Let the meatballs cook in the sauce for an additional 5-10 minutes.
  • Finish with fresh basil right before serving.

Notes

You can use ground turkey or chicken for a lighter dish. Serve over spaghetti or with garlic bread.
