  • 8 cups Bread, cubed Use a hearty bread like sourdough or whole wheat.
  • 1 cup Butter Fresh, unsalted butter can be replaced with olive oil.
  • 1 large Onion, diced Sweet onions add a lovely depth.
  • 1 cup Celery, diced Provides a nice crunch and freshness.
  • 3 cloves Garlic, minced Roasted garlic can be a twist.
  • 4 cups Chicken or Vegetable Broth Choose low-sodium for better control over salt levels.
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Sage Can be swapped for dried herbs.
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Thyme Can be swapped for dried herbs.
  • 1 tablespoon Fresh Parsley Can be swapped for dried herbs.
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  • In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Add the diced onion and celery. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until softened.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 2 minutes.
  • Combine the sautéed vegetables with the cubed bread in a large bowl.
  • Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth, then sprinkle the fresh herbs, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine until all bread is moistened.
  • Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Optionally, add a pat of butter on top.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes or until the top is golden brown.
  • Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Feel free to add nuts or dried fruits for creativity. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
