Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 6 cups 6 cups of apples (about 6 medium-sized; Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are great choices)
  • 3/4 cup 3/4 cup of brown sugar (light or dark; dark brown sugar will lend more caramel notes)
  • 1 teaspoon 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup a pinch of salt To balance the sweetness

For the Topping

  • 1 cup 1 cup of old-fashioned oats For delightful chewy texture
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup of flour (all-purpose or almond flour for a gluten-free option)
  • 1/4 cup 1/4 cup of unsalted butter (melted) (coconut oil works as a dairy-free substitute)

Instructions

Preparation

  • Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. Place them in your slow cooker.
  • Sprinkle the apples with half a cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Toss gently to combine.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the oats, flour, remaining brown sugar, and melted butter. Mix until well incorporated and crumbly.
  • Evenly distribute the crisp topping over the apples in the slow cooker.

Cooking

  • Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours.
  • In the last 30 minutes, do not peek to ensure the crisp continues to bubble.

Serving

  • Once the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender, serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For healthier options, substitute half the sugar with applesauce or use maple syrup. You can add dried cranberries or nuts for enhanced flavors. Reheating can be done in the microwave or slow cooker.
