Preparation

  • Ensure your sourdough starter is active and bubbly. Feed it 4-6 hours before you begin so it’s ready.
  • In a large bowl, combine the active starter, flour, water, salt, and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.
  • On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for a few minutes until it comes together smoothly.
  • Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  • Gently deflate the dough and shape it into a round loaf using parchment paper.
  • Line your crockpot with parchment paper for easy removal and lower the dough into the pot.
  • Cover and let it rise again for about 30 minutes.

Cooking

  • Set the crockpot on low and cook for 4-6 hours.
  • Once the bread is golden brown and cooked through, carefully lift it out using the parchment paper and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For added nutrition, substitute with whole wheat flour or use a gluten-free blend if needed. Store leftovers wrapped in a kitchen towel at room temperature for up to 3 days or freeze sliced bread for up to 3 months.
