For the frosting

  • 1 cup Unsalted butter (softened) The base for silky richness.
  • 3 to 4 cups Powdered sugar (sifted) Adjusts sweetness and thickness.
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons Vanilla extract Warms the frosting with cozy aroma.
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons Whole milk or cream Thins to your preferred consistency.
  • 1 pinch Fine salt Balances the sweetness.
  • 1 drop Almond extract (optional) For depth in flavor.

Preparation

  • Place softened butter in a large bowl and beat on medium speed until creamy and pale, about 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Lower the speed and gradually add 3 cups of sifted powdered sugar. Pause and scrape down the bowl to ensure everything mixes evenly.
  • Add vanilla extract and 2 tablespoons of milk. Beat on high for 30 to 60 seconds until light and fluffy.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add more milk a teaspoon at a time. If it is too thin, add a bit more powdered sugar.
  • Add a pinch of salt and a touch more vanilla if you want a bolder flavor. The texture should be spreadable but still hold gentle peaks.
  • If using food coloring, stir in gel color until you reach the desired shade.
  • Spread the frosting immediately over cooled sugar cookies.

Notes

Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to one week. Bring to room temperature and re-whip gently before using. Can freeze for up to 2 months.
